Tupu te toi, ora te toi, whanake te toi. Te toi i ahu mai i Hawaiki
Grow the treasure, sustain the treasure, develop the treasure. The treasure brought forth from Hawaiki. - Kiingi Tawhiao
This e-learning resource has been organised into three-series based on the tongikura left by Kiingi Tawhiao. Through this resource you will explore various topics designed to enhance your understanding and knowledge around takiwātanga. Each series will focus on a distinct subject area, providing in-depth insights and practical tools to guide you on your journey.
Tupu Te Toi | Grow the Treasure
This module is designed to plant the foundational seeds of knowledge about takiwātanga, offering a unique perspective rooted in te ao Māori (the Māori worldview). Through stories, values, and traditions, this module introduces how takiwātanga is viewed within te ao Māori, emphasising the idea that autism is a taonga (treasure) to be nurtured. It aims to help you understand the cultural context of takiwātanga and see it through a strength-based, holistic lens.
Whānau Resource
Ora Te Toi | Sustain the Treasure
Building on the foundational knowledge from module one, this module focuses on sustaining and nurturing an understanding of takiwātanga. It explores the process of identifying and navigating an autism diagnosis for yourself or your whānau, addressing practical considerations, challenges, and supports available. By providing guidance and empowerment, this module helps you make informed decisions that align with your values, encouraging a deepened connection with the unique characteristics and needs of tāngata whaitakiwātanga.
Whanake Te Toi | Develop the Treasure
This final module focuses on growth through traditional Māori practices, providing strategies for supporting takiwātanga that are both practical and deeply rooted in culture. You’ll hear personal stories from whānau and pūkenga, offering insights into how these practices nurture resilience, emotional well-being, and a strong sense of belonging. With tools that foster understanding, acceptance, and identity, this module equips you to create a supportive environment for those with takiwātanga, drawing on the wisdom of our ancestors and the strength of community as we journey together.
Kia mau ki ngā kōrero tuku iho.
– Hold fast to the knowledge that is passed down from generation to generation.
We hope this e-learning module will plant the seeds of knowledge within your own mara (garden), enabling you to nurture that understanding in a way that aligns with your personal journey and whānau.
